Defending champion North Texas sits on top, while Union Omaha gets a solid first slot

It might be a little later in the year than we anticipated, but the second season of USL League One is finally here. The action gets underway with two games on Saturday night, which will launch a battle over 15 weeks to see which teams will top the standings and earn their place in the 2020 USL League One Final in the final weekend of October.

And so, looking over the lay of the land, it’s also time to bring out the first League One Power Rankings of the year. Will North Texas SC’s new cast maintain the standard that it set a year ago? How will Union Omaha fare with what looks on paper a solid squad? And what of Greenville Triumph SC, Forward Madison FC and the rest?

Here’s an impression of where we stand going into the opening weekend of action.

Summary

1 North Texas SC
(0-0-0)
Week 1: --

2019: USL League One Title-Winners
The defending champion may have seen turnover in its squad – and some key figures get opportunities elsewhere – but they still get the top slot until proven otherwise with Ronaldo Damus back to lead the way. I’m particularly looking forward to what 2020 holds for David Rodriguez.
2 Greenville Triumph SC
(0-0-0)
Week 1: @FTL

2019: Lost in USL League One Final
Greenville’s challenge during the 2019 campaign was finding the net consistently. Getting a poacher like Jake Keegan back in the squad after scoring nine goals before going down with a season-ending injury last August should help that.
3 Forward Madison FC
(0-0-0)
Week 1: --

2019: Lost in Semifinals
The Flamingos have got their attacking centerpiece with Wojciech Wojcik, and that should be very welcome for the likes of Don Smart, Paulo Jr. and J.C. Banks to play off, but goalkeeping is going to be a question mark to start off.
4 Union Omaha
(0-0-0)
Week 1: --

2019: N/A
We thought Omaha looked good on paper, then they showed us some potential going undefeated against USL Championship opposition at the Wasatch Winter Cup. This has the potential to be a very good inaugural year.
5 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(0-0-0)
Week 1: --

2019: 5th in League
The brand-new CHI Memorial Stadium looks outstanding. Now the Red Wolves have to live up to their surroundings under new Head Coach Jimmy Obleda.
6 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(0-0-0)
Week 1: RIC

2019: 6th in League
South Georgia has a lot of players who are a year older and much wiser after the rigors of their first professional season. That has the potential to manifest itself in a stronger run through the 2020 campaign.
7 Richmond Kickers
(0-0-0)
Week 1: @TRM

2019: 9th in League
The Kickers are not used to – and do not like – being out of contention for silverware. I’m intrigued to see what Head Coach Darren Sawatzky can bring to the side as it looks for more attacking punch in 2020.
8 FC Tucson
(0-0-0)
Week 1: --

2019: 8th in League
The FC Tucson turnaround is in full swing on and off the field under President Amanda Powers. We’re going to have to wait and see a little, though, before we can make judgement of what the on-field product is going to look like under Head Coach John Galas.
9 New England Revolution II
(0-0-0)
Week 1: --

2019: N/A
The Revolution II have gone and brought in some players with Championship experience to go with the talent coming up from the club’s Academy. We’ll see how Head Coach Clint Peay makes it all mesh together.
10 Fort Lauderdale CF
(0-0-0)
Week 1: GVL

2019: N/A
There’s a big name on the sideline in Jason Kreis, and Servando Carrasco is the experienced head Fort Lauderdale will need to shepherd its youngsters along. If he becomes what James Chambers was to the Philadelphia
11 Orlando City B
(0-0-0)
Week 1: --

2019: 10th in League
A four-win season is going to result in plenty of changes, and that’s exactly what we’ve see at OCB this offseason. The new squad is going to have to earn some respect as it kicks off its new campaign.
