FC Tucson’s Trent Wieland played from the front in all four contests as he earned victory (10-2, 10-3, 7-1, 9-4) against Union Omaha’s Wesley Mims in the Final of the inaugural USL eCup: Rocket League Edition.

Tucson opened on the front foot in Game 1 and forced a good save within the opening 10 seconds, but after controlling the rebound Wieland took a full run at goal and lifted a long-range finish past Mims to open the scoring with 22 seconds gone. Union leveled with just over a minute gone as Mims took the rebound off an aerial finish by Tucson and carried it the length of the arena to score, but it took only 20 seconds for Tucson to regain the lead and 20 seconds more for Wieland to add another pair of goals to a 4-1 lead with 3:14 to play. A powerful challenge in the Omaha end almost 30 seconds later left Tucson with another easy chance to add to its lead, part of a five-goal run that put Wieland in control before Union pulled a goal back with 1:15 to play, making it 6-2. Tucson scored twice in the following 14 seconds, however, taking advantage of positive faceoff victories, and then rolled up another pair of goals in the final minute to wrap up an opening win.

FCT opened Game 2 in ideal fashion, redirecting a carom off the right wall perfectly after a squeezed opening faceoff to open the scoring after only three seconds. A missed midfield challenge by Omaha opened up a second goal for Tucson 15 seconds in, but Mims cut the deficit in half just past the 90-second mark after a big challenge opened up the chance to finish from long-distance on the right side. Union’s momentum was short-lived, however, as a shot high of the Tucson goal opened up a chance to counterattack for Wieland that he took full advantage of with a well-placed strike. Tucson struck again six seconds later with another precise finish from close to the halfway line before an aerial duel on the walls between the two sides resulted in another goal for Wieland. A great piece of control to finish in the top-left corner cut Omaha’s deficit to three with 2:34 to play, but the gap would get no closer as Tucson’s ability to strike from long range and close out chances for Los Buhos put Wieland halfway to the title.

Omaha came out firing in Game 3, but Tucson withstood the early pressure and then flipped the field to take the lead with a fine long-range finish after 29 seconds. Tucson then built a spell of pressure of its own and doubled its lead a minute later on a great aerial first-time finish from close to the halfway line. Union took advantage of a big miss by Tucson to make it a three-goal game midway through the period, instead taking the opportunity to counterattack and score, but Tucson quickly restored its two-goal lead and then added another after a big challenge in the attacking end set up an unchallenged finish. A sixth tally with a second to go in the game added further to Tucson’s lead, before it put the icing on the cake with a goal directly off the ensuing faceoff to wrap up a third consecutive win.

Tucson’s momentum carried into Game 4, where it produced another early save before opening the scoring with 24 seconds gone on the contest. Omaha hit back with just under 90 seconds gone, however, eluding an aggressive challenge near the halfway line before finishing from close range, but Mims was unable to keep out a looping finish by Tucson with 3:27 remaining, the first of two goals in seven seconds that restored Wieland’s upper hand. With victory essential, Omaha battled back within a goal just before the midway point of the game, but the gap became no closer as the sides exchanged goals before Tucson moved to a 7-3 lead with 1:10 to play. The final goal of the contest went to Mims – cutting Tucson’s lead to 9-5 with 21 seconds remaining, but that would be all as Wieland claimed the crown.
