Oil and canvas paintings are proving outlet for players to express themselves during downtime

STATESBORO, Ga. – Under normal circumstances, the players from South Georgia Tormenta FC would be currently getting ready to stroke the ball around Erk Russell Park in the 2020 USL League One season.

With the start of the season postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, they’ve turned to brush strokes to pass the time until training and live action resumes.

“We’re not good by no means, but we’re way better than I thought we were, so that’s probably why we kept on doing it,” Marco Micaletto told’s Greg Talbott. “It’s also quite satisfying to produce something that you’re proud of every now and then.”

Numerous players from the squad are now expressing themselves through oil and canvas paintings, which allows their creativity to come through during downtime away from the individual training guides the club has provided as everyone aims to stay safe during the current situation.

For the players themselves, it’s not necessarily a question of producing something that high-end collectors might appreciate, but more the opportunity to give a sense of their personalities and viewpoints that makes painting an ideal expressive outlet.

“I think the biggest difference for me is that I try to put some meaning behind my art pieces,” Nil Vinyals told Talbott. “I don’t really care how it looks, but it has a true meaning which represents how I see life.”

Of course, there are some pieces that have been produced within the squad that show some real signs of talent, with midfielder Mikie Rowe taking the chance to return to his expressive side in the studio.

“I personally have always been fantastic at art. I guess I was just born with that natural talent,” Rowe joked with Talbott. “The difficult part for me is now I’ve got a decision to make. Do I stick with football, or do I become an artist?”

As for what’s going to come of the paintings? Well, Micaletto told Talbott there’s a chance they could go on display at a local gallery, so stay tuned on that.
