FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — USL League One expansion club Fort Lauderdale CF has named Jason Kreis as its first Head Coach, the club announced Saturday. Kreis is the current U.S. Men’s National U-23 Team Head Coach and Inter Miami CF Senior Academy Director.

After an extensive playing career, Kreis transitioned to coaching, taking charge of Major League Soccer clubs Real Salt Lake, New York City FC, and Orlando City SC between 2007 and 2018. Kreis became the youngest coach in history to win MLS Cup when he guided Real Salt Lake to the title in 2009.

In January of 2019, Kreis was named Senior Academy Director of Inter Miami and in March of 2019 he was named Head Coach of the USMNT U-23 side.

Kreis will be joined by Martin Paterson, Chris Barocas, and Mateus Manoel on Fort Lauderdale CF’s coaching staff this season.

Paterson, who will serve as Kreis’ assistant, is a former member of the Tampa Bay Rowdies coaching staff where he helped the USL Championship side make the playoffs in 2019. As a player, Paterson spent the majority of his career with Burnley Football Club in England and made several appearances for the Northern Ireland National Team.

Barocas will serve as Fort Lauderdale’s Goalkeeper Coach and will bring a wealth of experience to the expansion side. Prior to joining Kreis’ staff, Barocas coached for the New York Red Bulls Academy, Orlando City SC,  and Orlando City B.

Manoel will serve as Developmental Performance Manager for Fort Lauderdale CF. He previously spent time with MLS club Sporting Kansas City, serving as Director of Sports Performance and Science in addition to serving as Head Fitness Coach for the Mexican Football Federation and Strength and Conditioning Coach for the U.S. Soccer Federation.

Inter Miami’s Director of Player Development and former San Antonio FC Head Coach, Darren Powell will serve as Fort Lauderdale CF’s Head Coach while Kreis is away with the U-23 national team at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

In addition to unveiling its full coaching staff, Fort Lauderdale announced its first ten players. The first-year club has signed goalkeepers Dylan Castanheira and Daniel Gagliardi; defenders Ian Fray, Modesto Mendez, Frank Nodarse, and Brian Rosales; midfielders Brian Ferri, Rivaldo Ibarra, and Eduardo Sosa; and forward Ricky Lopez Espin. All signings are pending league and federation approval.

Fray is the lone player in the group of signees to join the side from Inter Miami’s Academy. He previously appeared in nine matches for Miami’s U-19 U.S. Soccer Development Academy team.

Fort Lauderdale CF will announce the remaining players on its inaugural roster in the near future. The roster will include first team players on loan, additional Inter Miami CF Academy players, and new signings.
