Somali Football Federation honored midfielder after 2019 success


Mohamed earned his first international cap in September of 2019

Greenville Triumph SC’s Omar Mohamed was named National Footballer of the Year by the Somali Football Federation at a banquet celebrating the team’s 2019 season on Thursday evening. 

Mohamed earned two international call-ups for Somalia this year, playing in four matches in the 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in addition to two 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying fixtures. Mohamed made his international debut against Zimbabwe on September 5, helping Somalia earn its first-ever World Cup Qualifying win. He scored his first international goal five days later in a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe. 

“It means a lot to me and my family to receive this international recognition,” said Mohamed. “I’m just blessed and thankful for this prestigious award.”

Mohamed appeared in 24 matches for Greenville in 2019, tallying a goal and two assists and creating 37 chances. The winger is set to return to the Upstate in 2020.
