Forward Madison FC has re-signed midfielder Eric Leonard and forward Jiro Barriga Toyama for the 2020 season, the club announced this week. Leonard and Toyama join fellow returners from the 2019 squad Don Smart, Brian Sylvestre, Paulo Jr., and J.C. Banks on the club’s current 2020 roster.

Leonard appeared in all 29 USL League One matches for Forward Madison, playing 2,347 minutes during the 2019 season. The Palatine, Ill. native played an important role in Madison’s defensive success, finishing in the top ten in the league in tackles (61), duels won (182) and interceptions (54).

“Eric was an integral part of how we defended as a group,” said Forward Madison Head Coach Daryl Shore. “The spirit and the fight he brought to every game became a big part of how we played throughout the season. Eric will continue his role on the defensive side of the ball next season, but we also feel he has the capability to expand his game and become more of a two-way player.”

Toyama appeared in 26 league matches in 2019, providing a spark off the bench in 18 of those games. The Japanese-Colombian forward was a catalyst in the Flamingos’ US Open Cup run, scoring two goals to help the side reach the Third Round of the single-elimination tournament.

“We’re happy to have Jiro back for 2020,” Shore said. “He gives us much needed flexibility with his ability to play either as a left winger or left back. We think Jiro’s upside is tremendous, and we’re looking forward to having him play an even bigger role on our team next season.”
