Team name, crest and colors unveiled at community block party in Benson District

PAPILLION, Neb. – Alliance Omaha Soccer (USL Omaha) revealed the team name of Union Omaha, along with its crest design and colors, on Thursday evening at a community block party event in the Benson District of Omaha, Nebraska. The club is the newest member of USL League One and will begin play in April 2020 at Werner Park.

“We are a club formed by people with a common purpose; it only seemed appropriate that our name should embody this vision. We are honored to officially be Union Omaha,” said Alliance Omaha Soccer CEO and Managing Partner Gary Green. “This is a crest our players and our fans will wear over their hearts, and they do so knowing that it is not just the crest, but our club, being built from the ground up. We want to thank the thousands of fans that were a part of us identifying a name and designing the crest. We will continue to listen to you as we grow this club and grow Omaha.”

The team’s crest features a great horned owl; a fierce, competitive and intelligent predator that is a nighttime hunter native to the Omaha region and which rules the open-forested areas across Nebraska. The crest also incorporates an image iconic to the soccer community of an original football, a nod to soccer’s history and culture, and the team’s responsibility to educate and celebrate the sport in Omaha and beyond. The crest shape is inspired by the U.S. Soccer crest to represent the club’s role to support the growth of the sport and its role in the soccer landscape. The three stars represent the people, place and purpose.

The crest was designed by Matthew Wolff, owner of Matthew Wolff Design, in collaboration and input from the community.

“Union Omaha is the only American club represented by the great horned owl, and it will serve as a symbol for us to be fierce and competitive on the pitch,” said Matt Homonoff, the team’s Chief Operating Officer.  “Off the pitch, the stars will be our three pillars for all we do in the community. This club will always be about the incredible people that represent our region, creating a sense of place and sharing a common purpose to grow the beautiful game.”

The team colors are black, which represents power, intelligence, knowledge and wealth; white, the color of heroic characters and new beginnings, and lightning yellow, which represents the team's ability to strike and do so with a speed of force. The distinct yellow eyes of the great horned owl set it apart from all others.

Union Omaha’s inaugural season will kick off April 25, 2020, led by Head Coach Jay Mims, with home games played at Werner Park in Sarpy County. The club will conduct its first set of open tryouts before the end of 2019. Union Omaha will be the eleventh team to play in United Soccer League (USL) League One and the only professional soccer team in the state of Nebraska. The club is currently taking deposits for season tickets.
