Big first half powers Triumph SC to victory against Toronto and into top four in standings

Toronto FC II (1), Greenville Triumph SC (3)

Greenville Triumph SC rode three first-half goals to a third consecutive victory as it defeated Toronto FC II at the BMO Training Ground and moved into fourth place in the League One standings to kick off the weekend’s action.

Key Events:

Greenville took the lead in just the seventh minute when Dominic Boland cleaned up the rebound from Omar Mohamed’s shot from the edge of the penalty area after TFC II goalkeeper Yann-Alexandre Fillion made the initial save.

Triumph SC doubled its lead just past the half-hour mark as Jake Keegan redirected a challenge at the edge of Toronto’s penalty area to Xavier Gomez. The initial shot by Gomez was saved, but he took the rebound and centered for Keegan to tap home his ninth goal of the season.

Keegan’s goal moved him into a tie for the league-lead alongside North Texas SC’s Ronaldo Damus.

Three minutes later Mohamed added his name to the scoresheet when Gomez cut back a low cross from the right toward the penalty spot that picked out the late-arriving midfielder, earning Gomez his second assist of the contest.

Toronto’s Ayo Akinola pulled a goal back in the 64th minute after coming on as a halftime substitute as he ran onto a through-ball from Matt Srbely for a first-time finish past the advancing goalkeeper.

Greenville twice almost restored its two-goal lead soon after as both Paul Clowes and Aaron Walker had chances denied by Fillion.

Triumph SC goalkeeper Dallas Jaye also made an important save with 14 minutes to go to keep out a low shot by TFC II’s Jordan Perruzza that took a deflection on its way to goal.

Greenville would see out the remainder of the contest, however, to end the day in the playoff positions in League One.
