Smart's strike lifts Madison over Tucson; Beattie's penalty enough as CRWSC tops North Texas

Greenville Triumph SC (1) v South Georgia Tormenta FC (0)

Greenville Triumph SC defeated South Georgia Tormenta FC, 1-0, Saturday night at Legacy Early College. Greenville's win brings the season series to 1-1-1 with the two clubs set to meet one more time on the final day of the regular season.

Key Events:

Omar Mohamed and Jake Keegan combined in the 29th minute to score the game’s only goal. Mohamed beat his defender to the endline and found Keegan with a cutback. Keegan did well to open his hips and  push a first time finish in towards the far post for his eighth goal of the season.

With his tally against Tormenta, Keegan is now one goal behind North Texas SC’s Ronaldo Damus for the league lead.

Dallas Jaye earned his ninth clean sheet Saturday night, bringing him level with Tormenta FC’s Pablo Jara for the league lead. Jaye had little to do throughout the night as his defense held Tormenta to two shots, neither of which found the target.

The three points earned on Saturday night temporarily move Greenville into fifth place in the League One standings, with two matches still underway after the final whistle in South Carolina. Winners of three of the last four, Greenville will look to continue its charge up the table next week when the side visits Toronto FC II for the first time this season.

The loss allowed Lansing Ignite FC to overtake Tormenta FC and move into sole possession of second place. Tormenta is still sitting comfortably in third place, but will be hoping to get back into the win column next week at home against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC.

Lansing Ignite FC (3) v Orlando City B (0)

Lansing Ignite FC defeated Orlando City B, 3-0, Saturday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Key Events:

For the second time in four days, Robinson Moshobane opened the scoring for Ignite FC. Xavier Gomez forced a turnover in Lansing’s attacking third and slipped Moshobane through on goal. Moshobane dribbled around goalkeeper Juliano Chade and rolled a shot into the open net, scoring his fifth goal of the season and giving Lansing the lead in the 8th minute.

Elma N’For doubled the host’s advantage six minutes later, nodding Moshobane’s service from a corner kick past Chade for his third goal of the season.

Kyle Carr and Rafael Mentzigen connected in the 84th minute to seal the three points for Lansing. Carr flicked a ball through to Mentzingen who did well to bring the ball down with his thigh before firing a volley past Chade to score his fourth goal of the season.

Stefan Cleveland earned his sixth clean sheet in goal on Saturday night as the Ignite extended its unbeaten run to seven games. After earning six points this week, Nate Miller’s side has moved into sole possession of second place and within touching distance of league-leading North Texas SC. LIFC will look to keep the positive momentum going when they visit OCB next Friday.

Saturday’s loss to Lansing was Orlando’s fifth consecutive. OCB remains in tenth place in the League One standings and is still in search of its first road victory of the season.

Chattanooga Red Wolves SC v North Texas SC

Chattanooga Red Wolves SC defeated North Texas SC, 1-0, Saturday night at David Stanton Field.

Key Events:

Steven Beattie’s penalty kick goal in the 54th minute was enough to secure all three points for the Red Wolves Saturday night. Beattie’s well-struck penalty beat goalkeeper Carlos Avilez to his left despite the 19-year old shot stopper guessing correctly and getting a good jump on the strike. The goal was Beattie’s eighth of the season, bringing him within one of North Texas SC’s Ronaldo Damus for the league lead.

The entire match was a defensive struggle, with the Red Wolves putting just two shots on frame and North Texas unable to hit the target throughout the 90 minutes.

North Texas was reduced to ten men when Bicou Bissainthe was shown his second yellow card in the 70th minute. Down a man and down a goal, North Texas couldn’t recover and dropped its second consecutive match.

Head Coach Eric Quill’s side has earned just four points from the previous five matches, allowing the clubs behind them in the table to make up ground. North Texas still sits atop the League One standings, but now has just a one point lead on Lansing Ignite FC. They’ll look to right the ship next Saturday at home against FC Tucson.

Saturday’s win was Chattanooga’s first in six matches after four consecutive draws and a loss to Lansing midweek. Alex Mangels earned his sixth clean sheet despite not having to make a save. The Red Wolves now sit level on points with fourth-place Forward Madison FC. Chattanooga will travel to play South Georgia Tormenta next weekend.

Forward Madison FC (1) v FC Tucson (0)

Forward Madison FC defeated FC Tucson, 1-0, Saturday night at Breese Stevens Field.

Key Events:

Don Smart scored the game’s only goal with an impressive finish just before halftime. Josiel Nunez found Smart on the right flank with space in front of him. Smart too a few dribbles towards goal before striking a bending shot that found the top corner of Carlos Merancio Valdez’s goal. The goal was Smart’s seventh of the season.

Smart’s wonder-strike was enough as Forward Madison went on to secure its third clean sheet of the season and take all three points. The Flamingos have now won three straight and six of their last nine to move themselves firmly into the middle of the race for the top four. After Saturday’s results, six points separate first from fifth giving all five teams in the top half of the table everything to play for in the final quarter of the season. Madison will remain at home and host the Richmond Kickers next Saturday.

Tucson suffered its first loss in six matches Saturday night in Madison and dropped to seventh place in the League One standings. Head Coach Darren Sawatzky’s side faces two more tough road matches at North Texas SC and South Georgia Tormenta FC before returning home to play seven of their final eight matches at Kino Sports Complex.
