Red Wolves rally to earn point against Tucson, run undefeated streak to nine games

SOUTH GEORGIA TORMENTA FC (1) V LANSING IGNITE FC (1)

Tormenta FC’s Pablo Jara saved a penalty kick on the final play of the game, allowing Shinya Kadono’s debut goal late in the game to stand as the equalizer against Ignite FC

Key Events

Ignite FC had the first big chance in the fifth minute when Tumi Moshobane found space in the penalty area, but his low shot was parried and then covered by Tormenta FC goalkeeper Jara.

Seven minutes later, however, the visitors took the lead as Rafa Mentzingen controlled a low cross from the right by Nick Moon and with his second touch shot into the left corner of the net from 12 yards.

Mentzingen almost added a second on the half-hour mark as Moshobane found him 16 yards from goal, but Jara did enough to turn the shot wide of the right post.

Lansing’s Elma Nfor was the next to go close with a curling shot from the top of the penalty area that hit the crossbar 10 minutes before halftime.

Tormenta FC had its best chance of the half moments later as Charlie Dennis found space centrally and fired from 25 yards, but his shot went wide of the right post.

Lansing hit the woodwork for the second time on the night in the 54th minute when Pato Botello Faz’s header from a free kick by Xavier Gomez came back off the crossbar. Ignite FC held possession in the attacking third, but Tormenta FC defender Josh Phelps blocked Nfor’s shot and the hosts cleared.

Tormenta FC had a half-chance with 18 minutes to go when a lifted cross by Conner Antley from the left side of the penalty area couldn’t be redirected on target by Alex Morrell.

Morell went close with seven minutes to go as he was found in space on the left side of the penalty area by Lucas Coutinho, but his curled finish went just wide of the right post.

South Georgia equalized in the 88th minute, however, as Kadono slid home a finish from a narrow angle on the left side of the area that tucked just inside the right post after Morrell’s lead pass.

Lansing had a final chance to regain the lead when it was awarded a penalty kick deep in stoppage time, but Jara came up with a one-handed save to deny Nfor’s shot to the left corner and leave honors even.

Tormenta FC will hit the road next Saturday night as it looks to add to its three-game undefeated streak against Greenville Triumph SC, while Lansing returns home for a Wednesday-night meeting with Chattanooga Red Wolves SC.

FORWARD MADISON FC (1) V ORLANDO CITY B (0)

Forward Madison FC dominated in front of a sellout crowd of 4,539 and got a goal by J.C. Banks to defeat Orlando City B at Breese Stevens Field.

Key Events

Madison almost took the lead in the third minute when a long crossfield ball by Wyatt Omsberg picked out Paulo Junior on the left, but the Brazilian’s finish from just inside the penalty area flashed over the crossbar.

The hosts threatened again in the fifth minute when Oliver White was slid into the left side of the penalty area, but his low shot was saved by OCB goalkeeper Christian Herrera.

Madison got a big opportunity to take the lead in the 25th minute when White was brought down in the penalty area by Orlando’s Matheus Silva, but Don Smart sent his penalty kick wide to keep the game scoreless.

The Flamigos continued to press and put the ball in the net through J.C. Banks off a corner kick in the 32nd minute, but the goal was ruled out for a foul prior to the attacking midfielder’s header.

Madison threatened once more before halftime as Smart found space on the right and delivered a low cross to the top of the six-yard area, but Herrera smothered White’s close-range redirection.

The breakthrough finally arrived for the Flamingos in the 57th minute as a through-ball by Josiel Núñez found Banks cutting into the penalty, and the veteran calmly rounded the goalkeeper and finished into an open net.

Madison almost doubled its lead in the 72nd minute when a long-range effort by Paulo Junior was parried into the path of Smart, but his first-time finish went just wide of the left post.

Paulo Junior also went close five minutes later with a ripped shot from the top of the penalty area that went wide of the left post after Núñez stole possession in the attacking third.

Orlando’s only shot on goal arrived in the 87th minute as Rafael Santos curled a free kick from left of center on target, but it was comfortably saved by Madison goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.

Madison will try to build on its victory when it visits Toronto FC II on Wednesday night, while Orlando will try to break a four-game losing streak when it visits Lansing Ignite FC next Saturday.

CHATTANOOGA RED WOLVES SC (1) V FC TUCSON (1)

The Red Wolves played to a fourth consecutive draw as they rallied to earn a point against Tucson at David Stanton Field.

Key Events

Tucson took the lead inside the opening minute as a header off a corner kick by Jordan Jones came back off the crossbar to Kyle Venter, who shot home from eight yards out.

The visitors had a chance to double their lead in the sixth minute when Devin Vega stole possession 25 yards from goal, but his shot from just outside the penalty area went wide of the left post.

Chattanooga thought it had pulled level in the 32nd minute when an angled cross by Andrew Kendall-Moullin found Steven Beattie for a close-range finish, but the offside flag was raised to deny the finish.

The hosts threatened again just past the hour-mark when Juan Mare sent a header from a cross by Beattie over the crossbar.

The Red Wolves equalized in then 69th minute, however, when substitute Eamon Zayed headed home at the back post off a corner from the left by Vangjel Zguro moments after being introduced.

Both teams had chances in the final 20 minutes, but a breakthrough didn’t arrive as honors ended even and the Red Wolves’ undefeated streak reached nine games.

Chattanooga will get back in action on Wednesday night when it faces another key game in the playoff race on the road at Lansing Ignite FC, while Tucson will continue its road trip next Saturday in Madison.
