Jambga leads Tucson to victory over Greenville; North Texas, Tormenta play to scoreless draw

FC Tucson defeated Greenville Triumph SC, 3-1, Saturday night at Legacy Early College. 

Key Events: 

Carlos Gomez opened the scoring for Greenville in the 15th minute. Gomez nicked the ball off a Tucson defender, leaving him one-on-one with goalkeeper Carlos Merancio Valdez. Gomez calmly rolled the ball into the far corner to score his second goal of the season. 

Devyn Jambga pulled the visitors level five minutes later after receiving a pass from Jordan Jones out wide on the left near midfield. Jambga drove at the Greenville goal, drawing several defenders towards him before curling a right-footed shot into the top corner of Dallas Jaye’s goal to score his fourth goal of the season. 

FC Tucson broke the deadlock just after halftime. Jamael Cox served in a cross from the right flank that missed everyone and fell kindly to Kyle Venter who made no mistake, slotting it home for his third goal of the season. 

Jones and Jambga connected again in the 58th minute to give FCT a two-goal lead. Jones broke free on a counter attack down the right flank and rolled a cross field pass to Jambga who smashed a shot into the roof of the netto complete his brace. 

With the win, Tucson moves into sixth place in the League One standings, just two points back of fourth-place Chattanooga Red Wolves SC. FCT became just the second team this season to score multiple goals against Greenville in a single match. The victory in Greenville was Tucson’s third of the season, bringing them level with North Texas SC for the most in the league. Darren Sawatzky’s side will continue its six-game road stretch next Saturday in Chattanooga. 

The loss was Greenville’s first in four matches. The Triumph remain in the hunt for the playoffs, four points off the fourth and final playoff place. Greenville will travel to play league-leading North Texas next Friday.

Richmond Kickers defeated Orlando City B, 1-0, Saturday night at City Stadium

Key Events: 

Dennis Chin appeared to give Richmond an early lead following a corner kick in the 16th minute. Ivan Magalhães headed Joe Gallardo’s delivery off the post and Chin vollied in the rebound, but the referee waved off the goal for offside. 

Chin eventually got himself on the scoresheet in the 70th minute, volleying Wahab Ackwei’s cross home from eight yards out. The goal was Chin’s third goal of the season and Richmond’s first in 620 minutes. 

Three players were shown red cards following a scuffle inside the Kickers’ six-yard box in the 82nd minute. Richmond’s Akira Fitzgerald and Orlando’s William Bagrou and Randy Mendoza were all sent off, leaving their clubs to finish the match with 19 players on the field. 

Chin’s goal was enough to earn the Kickers their first win since May 11 and hand Orlando their six loss in their last seven matches. The three points earned on Saturday move Richmond into ninth place in the table, two points ahead of OCB.

North Texas SC and Tormenta FC played to a 0-0 draw Saturday night at Toyota Stadium. 

Key Events: 

North Texas had an opportunity to open the scoring in the 16th minute as Kevin Bonilla swung in a dangerous cross that fell to Ricardo Pepi. After struggling to get the ball out from his feet, Pepi struck a shot off the post that bounced to Tanner Tessmann. Tessmann struck the rebound sweetly, but his shot bounced off the crossbar and stayed out. 

Pepi had another chance to push the hosts out in front in the 34th minute after Jonathan Gomez found him with a teasing cross played in behind the Tormenta defense, but his half volley struck the wrong side of the side netting. 

Tormenta’s best chance of the night came from a set piece in the 71st minute. Nick Vinyalls served the dead ball towards the penalty spot. Dalton Knutson rose to meet the cross, but got under it and sent his header soaring over Carlos Avilez’s goal. 

Vinyalls was shown a red card in the 74th minute for a dangerous tackle on Bonillla near the right sideline.

North Texas had another opportunity to put themselves in front from the penalty spot in the 77th minute after Bonilla was tripped up inside the 18-yard box. Pepi missed the target from the spot, pushing his shot wide of Pablo Jara’s left post. 

The 0-0 draw preserves North Texas’ eight point lead at the top of the League One standings. Jara earned his league best ninth clean sheet of the season and Avilez secured his eighth. With Saturday’s draw, Tormenta FC became just the second team this season to earn a point at Toyota Stadium, while North Texas extended its unbeaten record at home to 7-0-2.
