Walker's late goal leads Greenville to victory over OCB

Greenville Triumph SC defeated Orlando City B, 1-0, Saturday night at Legacy Early College. 

Key Events

The Triumph had an opportunity to jump out to an early lead when Jake Keegan earned a penalty in the 18th minute. Keegan took the penalty after earning it, firing a hard shot to his left, but Christian Herrera made an impressive save, keeping the strike out with a strong left hand. 

The match entered a near-three hour weather delay in the 24th minute. 

Aaron Walker scored the game’s decisive goal in the 88th minute after Chris Bermudez laid the ball back to him 25 yards from goal. Walker took a touch to make space for his shot and hit a low strike that found the bottom corner of Herrera’s goal to steal three points for Greenville at the death. 

Dallas Jaye earned his seventh clean sheet of the season in goal to bring him within one of the league lead. Jaye had little to do in Saturday’s match, making just one save on ten shots. 

Saturday’s win moves Greenville into sixth place in the League One standings and leaves them just four points out of the playoff positions with games in hand on the third and fourth place teams. The win also extends the Triumph’s unbeaten streak to three matches, their longest unbeaten stretch of the season.

Forward Madison FC and Chattanooga Red Wolves SC played to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Breese Stevens Field.

Key Events: 

Forward Madison captain Connor Tobin opened the scoring in the 20th minute, connecting with Danny Tenorio’s in-swigning corner kick to score his first goal of the season. 

Chattanooga equalized in the 77th minute after Head Coach Tim Hankinson made two attacking changes. The goal came from a serve on the left flank sent in by Vangjel Zguro. Nicholas Amponsah beat his defender to the cross, nodding it into the ground and beating goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair to score his first goal of the season. 

The draw extends Chattanooga’s unbeaten run to eight matches, with the Red Wolves’ last loss coming on May 18th. The point on Saturday keeps Chattanooga in fourth place, just one point off Lansing Ignite FC and South Georgia Tormenta FC, with two games in hand on Lansing. The Red Wolves have a bye in Week 17 and will return home to host FC Tucson on July 27th. 

Madison remains in seventh place following the draw, with the possibility of dropping to eighth depending on the result between Greenville Triumph SC and Orlando City B which restarted at 10:10 PM ET after a 139 minute weather delay. Despite picking up just one point from a possible six this week, the Flamingos are still just five points out of the fourth playoff spot with twelve matches left to be played, seven of which will come at home. They’ll host OCB in Week 17 after a bye week in Week 16.    

Lansing ignite fc (2) v fc tucson (2)

Lansing Ignite FC and FC Tucson played to a 2-2 draw Saturday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. 

Key Events

Robinson “Tumi” Moshobane opened the scoring for Lansing in the 26th minute, converting a penalty that he earned minutes prior. Moshobane struck the spot kick in off the post to his left to score his second goal of the season.

FC Tucson scored an equalizer eight minutes later following a Lansing turnover at midfield. Ramone Howell picked up the ball and showed a good turn of pace as he dribbled 50 yards before slotting a shot between goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland’s legs to draw Tucson level. The goal was Howell’s first of the season.  

Moshobane completed a brace just after halftime to put the hosts back in front. The South African center forward received a pass from Rafael Mentzingen at the top of the 18-yard box and curled a left-footed shot around goalkeeper Philip Ejimadu and into the side netting of the far post. 

Jordan Jones equalized once again three minutes later from the penalty spot, striking the ball hard across his body and beating Cleveland at his right post to score his third goal of the season. 

The draw brings Lansing level on points with second-place South Georgia Tormenta FC with four more matches played. The point keeps FC Tucson within touching distance of the top four, just four points back of Chattanooga Red Wolves SC at the final whistle.

richmond kickers (0) v north texas sc (2)

North Texas SC defeated the Richmond Kickers, 2-0, Saturday night at City Stadium. 

Key Events

North Texas SC struck first through Thomas Roberts in the 11th minute. Roberts received a pass from Ronaldo Damus and took space in front of him as the Richmond defenders dropped off before curling a left-footed shot into the side netting of the far post from 25 yards our to put the visitors in front early. The goal was Roberts’ second of the season. 

Calum Montgomery doubled North Texas’ lead three minutes later, flicking Arturo Rodriguez’s in-swinging corner in at the near post. The goal was Montgomery’s second of the season, while Rodriguez registered his league-leading sixth assist. 

Golden Boot leader Ronaldo Damus left the match with an apparent injury in the 20th minute. 

Richmond’s Jannik Eckenrode was sent off after being shown his second yellow card in the 89th minute. 

With the victory, North Texas extends its lead at the top of the League One standings to eight points with one more match played than second-place South Georgia Tormenta. Goalkeeper Carlos Avilez earned his seventh clean sheet in the match against Richmond, bringing him within one of Pablo Jara for the league lead. 

Richmond has now lost four straight and six of their last eight. The Kickers sit in last place in the standings, one point behind Orlando City B. Head Coach David Bulow’s side hasn’t scored a goal in 550 minutes of game play, registering just 11 shots on target since June 1.
