Tucson tops Toronto to climb into playoff race

FC Tucson defeated Toronto FC II, 3-0, Wednesday night at Kino Sports Complex in Arizona.

Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu opened the scoring in the fifth minute, smacking a half volley into the top corner from 20 yards out after Kyle Bjornethun’s long throw was partially cleared by a Toronto defender. The goal was Wheeler-Omiunu’s second of the season.

Devin Vega doubled Tucson’s lead in the 19th minute after a tidy exchange inside with Raheem Sommersall sprung him free in the penalty area. Sommersall drove at Toronto’s back four before finding Vega with a square pass. Vega took his first touch around an on-rushing defender and tucked his third goal of the season into the back of the net.

Jordan Jones made it three for the hosts seven minutes later, slotting a shot from distance past goalkeeper Yann Alexandre Fillion to score his second goal of the season. Carlos Merancio Valdez was credited with the assists on Jones’ goal.

Bjornethun scored an own goal in the 77th minute, knocking a Luca Petrasso cross into his own net to help Toronto cut into the deficit, but that’s as close as the match would get as Tucson walked away with the 3-1 win.

Takeaways:

QUICK START: After a lengthy break from League One action, FC Tucson came out of the gates firing on Wednesday night. Darren Sawatzky’s side scored three goals inside of the opening 26 minutes to suck the life out of the young Toronto FC II side. The win improves Tucson’s home record to 3-1-3 on the year and moves them into sixth place in the League One standings. Following Wednesday’s win,  FCT will hit the road for six straight matches before playing seven of its last eight at home to close out the season.

ROAD WOES: Wednesday’s loss was Toronto’s fifth on the road this season, tying FC Tucson for the most by a club in League One. TFCII has played nine of its opening 14 games away from home this season and have managed just eight points from those matches. With their last win coming on June 8th, the Reds will be looking forward to getting back home next Friday when they host South Georgia Tormenta FC in the first of five straight matches at BMO Training Ground.
