Red Wolves strike deep in stoppage time; Ignite FC holds off Tormenta FC in draw

Chattanooga Red Wolves SC broke a four-game winless streak at the death as Greenville Triumph SC suffered the same old story in front of goal, while Lansing Ignite FC became the first visitor to earn a point on the road against South Georgia Tormenta FC this season.

SOUTH GEORGIA TORMENTA FC (0), LANSING IGNITE FC (0)

STATESBORO, Ga. – Ignite FC withstood Tormenta FC’s pressure to become the first visitor to earn a road point at Erk Russell Park this season. Tormenta FC’s Lucas Coutinho had the first big chance in the 20th minute as he wove past two defenders into the left side of the penalty area and had a low shot parried by Lansing goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland before the rebound was shuffled behind by a defender. Chances were limited for both sides during the first half, however, and the first good chance of the second half didn’t arrive until the 59th minute when Tormenta FC’s Marco Micaletto almost found space for a finish but was closed down well by Cleveland to keep the game scoreless. South Georgia also threatened with 19 minutes to go when Mikie Rowell’s close-range header was claimed by Cleveland, but while Lansing failed to test South Georgia goalkeeper Pablo Jara over the course of the game and registered just three shots overall it was able to come away with a point for its fourth successive draw.

CHATTANOOGA RED WOLVES SC (1), GREENVILLE TRIUMPH SC (0)

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Red Wolves got a goal deep in stoppage time to make Triumph SC pay for a score of missed chances at David Stanton Field. Greenville went close to opening the scoring in the ninth minute when Max Hemmings’ header off a corner from the right was cleared off the goal line by Red Wolves defender Colin Falvey. Triumph SC’s Omar Mohamed also tested Chattanooga goalkeeper Alex Mangels with a shot from 20 yards that was parried away just before the half-hour mark, and Mangels was called on again eight minutes into the second half to make a big save as Carlos Gomez broke into the left channel only to have his shot denied. Gomez had another tremendous effort denied by Mangels in the 68th minute as he hit a dipping volley toward the bottom-left corner from the edge of the penalty area the Red Wolves’ goalkeeper got down well to turn away. The Red Wolves went close late as Sito Seoane fired just high and wide of the left post from 30 yards, but in the fourth minute of stoppage time second-half substitute Eamon Zayed fired home from close range after Triumph SC had failed to clear a free kick and stole all three points.
