FC TUCSON (4) VS CHATTANOOGA RED WOLVES SC (0)

TUCSON, Ariz. - Two goals in either half helped FC Tucson to a 4-0 win over Chattanooga Red Wolves SC at Kino Sports Complex. Jordan Jones opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 25th minute after the referee whistled for a handball in the box on a Chattanooga defender. Kody Wasaka doubled the lead ten minutes later, hammering home a rebound that goalkeeper Alex Mangels spilled from a Karsten Hanlin free kick. Chattanooga’s best chance to get back into the match came in the 42nd minute when YaYa Cisse rounded goalkeeper Philip Ejimadu and scuffed a shot towards the empty net. Kyle Venter raced back to clear the shot off the line and Cisse’s header on the ensuing rebound pinged off the post to send Tucson into the halftime break with a two-goal lead. The hosts continued to create productive counter attacks in the second half and put the game out of reach with 25 minutes to go when Jones nicked the ball off of a Red Wolves midfielder in Tucson’s attacking third. The center forward drove at goal before firing a shot off the post from 20 yards out. The rebound fell kindly to Devyn Jambga who calmly curled a shot into the side netting of the back post to make it 3-0. Jambga completed his brace minutes later, capping off a great individual effort by Zach Wright. The win improves Tucson’s record to 3-3-1, while the loss drops the Red Wolves to 2-4-2 on the season with both wins coming at home.

FORWARD MADISON (0) FC VS TORMENTA FC (1)

MADISON, Wisc - Reigning League One Player of the Month, Conner Antley was the difference as Tormenta FC earned its third straight league win, defeating Forward Madison FC, 1-0, at Breese Stevens Field. Madison’s J.C. Banks nearly opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a blistering shot taken from 25 yards out, but Tormenta goalkeeper Pablo Jara reacted well, diving to his right to get a hand to the dipping effort. Antley broke the deadlock just after the halftime break following a corner kick served deep in the Madison 18-yard box. Daltyn Knutson nodded Charlie Dennis’ service on frame, forcing goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre to tip it onto the crossbar. Antley was in the right place at the right time and pounced on the rebound to give Tormenta a 1-0 lead.  Following Antley’s goal, the game opened up with Madison seeking an equalizer and Tormenta looking for insurance, but neither would come. The Flamingos came within a whisper of their sought after equalizer in the dying moments of the match, but Banks’ flicked header rolled just past the far post and Madison dropped its first match at home this season. The impressive road win moves Tormenta to the top of the table above North Texas SC who have two games in hand on the new league-leaders.

LANSING IGNITE FC (2) VS NORTH TEXAS SC (2)

LANSING, Mich. - North Texas SC battled back from a two-goal deficit against Lansing Ignite FC to rescue a point and preserve its unbeaten start to the 2019 season. Playing at home, Lansing looked the more likely side to score in the first half and came close to breaking the deadlock in the 31st minute. Nick Moon played Steeve Saint-Duc in behind the North Texas back four, leaving him one-on-one with goalkeeper Carlos Avilez, but Avilez was quick off his line and did well to deflect Saint-Duc’s shot out for a corner kick. Lansing would open the scoring just after the halftime break from a set piece. Rafael Mentzingen rose highest to meet Xavier Gomez’s inswinging service and nod the ball past Avilez to make it 1-0. The hosts doubled their lead ten minutes later after a heads-up play by Marshall Hollingsworth. The midfielder took a quick throw-in, finding Alex Bruce unmarked inside the 18-yard box. Bruce let the ball run across his body and poked it past Avilez to double his side’s advantage. In his first game back from the Concacaf U17 championship, Ricardo Pepi turned things around for North Texas, firing a curling free kick into the top corner to half the deficit in the 83rd minute. Arturo Rodriguez would sneak a shot past goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland at the near post four minutes later to rescue a point. The 2-2 draw marks the first time this season North Texas dropped points.

GREENVILLE TRIUMPH (1) SC VS RICHMOND KICKERS (0)

GREENVILLE, SC - Jake Keegan’s first half goal was enough to lift Greenville Triumph SC over the Richmond Kickers Saturday night at Legacy Early College. Greenville started on the front foot, winning the possession and shot battle in the first half. Keegan’s goal came in the 42nd minute after he battled multiple defenders for a loose, bouncing ball at the top of Richmond’s 18-yard box. As the defender misplayed the bounce, Keegan smartly lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper with his first touch to give Greenville a 1-0 lead. Richmond’s best chance to equalize came just after the halftime break as Joe Gallardo broke free down the right flank and served a low cross to the feet of Daniel Jackson twelve yards out from goal. Goalkeeper Dallas Jaye did well to get a hand to Jackson’s first time effort and preserve his side’s one-goal lead. The cleansheet is Jaye’s third of the season, ranking him among the league-leaders. Greenville pressed hard for an insurance goal throughout the second half, forcing Richmond goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald into ten saves, but the lone goal was enough as Greenville earned its third win of the season.
