Rodriguez leads second-half romp as North Texas remains perfect

NORTH TEXAS SC (4), ORLANDO CITY B (1)

FRISCO, Texas - North Texas SC continued its perfect start to the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon, claiming a 4-1 victory over Orlando City B in front of a home crowd at Toyota Stadium. Playing behind for the first time all season following William Bagrou’s early second half goal for Orlando City B, North Texas came storming back, scoring four unanswered and once again claiming their spot at the top of the League One standings. First up for North Texas was Tanner Tessman who scored from close distance, followed by a terrific team move in the 77th-minute that culminated in a thunderous strike from Johan Gomez. Next up was Arturo Rodriguez who scored from the spot just six minutes later after Orlando defender Randy Mendoza was called for foul in the box. The kids from Texas then made it four when Ronaldo Damus touched home a well-placed cross from Rodriguez in the closing moments.

Arturo Rodriguez, North Texas SC – Rodriguez scored and set up another as his side scored four unanswered second half goals to maintain their place at the top of the League One standings. Rodriguez created eight chances in all and completed 43 passes.

CHATTANOOGA RED WOLVES SC  (2) VS FORWARD MADISON FC (2)

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A slow first half gave way to a stormer of a second as the Chattanooga Red Wolves played to a 2-2 draw with Forward Madison at David Stanton Field on Saturday night. An early goal with Connor Doyle was all that separated the two side in the opening 45-minutes of play, but after the half, the game burst in to life with three goals in the span of six minutes. First an unfortunate own goal from Chattanooga defender Vangjel Zguro followed just minutes later by a goal from Forward’s Josiel Núñez to give the visitor’s a 2-1 lead. That lead did not last long however, as Éamon Zayed’s diving header in the 56th minute tied that match and ensured that both teams would leave with a point.

Josiel Núñez, Forward Madison – Núñez was a handful all night for Red Wolves defenders, completing 68 passes at an 82% clip, while also scoring the teams go-ahead goal in the second half.

LANSING IGNITE FC (1) VS GREENVILLE TRIUMPH SC (1)

LANSING, Mich. – Fresh off mid-week wins in U.S. Open Cup play, Lansing Ignite and Greenville Triumph played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. A couple of good chances went begging for Lansing in the first half – who controlled play for much of the opening 45 minutes – and the hosts were made to pay for their missed opportunities as Greenville’s Travis Ward slotted home his right-footed effort in the 68th-minute to give the visitors the lead. It was well-deserved from John Harkes’ men who grew in to the match as time wore on. The lead wouldn’t last long, however, as Ignite showed clawed backed in to the match through Ricky Lopez-Espin, who put the hosts level just eight minutes later with a point-blank header. Both teams had half-chances late, but the game would ultimately end a goal apiece.

Ivo Cerda, Lansing Ignite – Cerda completed 57 passes and won eight duels while registering three tackles and three interceptions on the night.

RICHMOND KICKERS (2) VS FC TUCSON (0)

LANSING, Mich. – After a rough start to 2019 it’s fair to say that the Richmond Kickers have officially rebounded. On Saturday night in front of a boisterous home crowd at City Stadium the Kickers downed FC Tucson, 2-1, to notch their fourth win in five matches across all competitions. Once again, the catalyst for their win was midfielder Joe Gallardo whose late game heroics ensured the Kickers maximum points. In the early stages though, it was a balanced affair, and only great goalkeeping on both ends of the park kept the match level heading in to half. While a few half chances were created throughout the second stanza, it was Gallardo who provided the game’s defining moment, beautifully turning past two Tucson defenders, slaloming through the attacking third and unleashing a powerful right-footed shot past Tucson keeper Philip Ejimadu to give his side the advantage. The lead was then doubled six minutes in to injury time by Mutaya Mwape whose left footed shot from the right side of the box beat Ejimadu to put the game beyond reach.

Joe Gallardo, Richmond Kickers – Gallardo has been a revelation for Richmond so far this season, and Saturday night was no different. Gallardo connected on 31 passes and won six duels, but it was his moment of magic in the second half that broke the game open for Richmond.
