Smart shines in Madison victory, North Texas remains perfect

North Texas continued to impress with a 1-0 victory in its first away match of the season; Richmond and Lansing ended in a draw after a back and forth match at City Stadium.

MADISON, Wisc. - Forward Madison FC earned its first home win in history Saturday night and handed Toronto FC II its first loss of the season in the process. TFC II nearly opened the scoring in the 22nd minute as Jordan Perruzza found himself one-on-one with Ryan Coulter 12 yards out, but Coulter came up big to deny Perruzza and keep the visitors off the board. Ten minutes later Paulo Jr. claimed the first Forward Madison goal at Breese Stevens Field, bundling a Don Smart cross over the line. TFC II’s Jacob Shaffelburg answered almost immediately. Shaffelburg received the ball on the right flank and drove towards goal, skipping past multiple defenders on his way and slotting a shot past Coulter to equalize. Smart provided the assist on Madison’s go-ahead goal in the 69h minute, showing composure in the penalty area before laying a pass back to Carter Manly who knocked the ball home to put the Flamingos in front. Coulter was forced to make two big saves in the dying moments before Smart secured all three points, finishing a cross from Paulo Jr. Man of the Match

Don Smart, Forward Madison - Smart had a goal and two assists, leading the way for Madison’s offensive breakout against TFC II.

RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond Kickers and Lansing Ignite played to a 2-2 draw Saturday night in what was the third meeting between the two sides this season. The match went back and forth in thrilling fashion, with Dennis Chin opening the scoring for Richmond in the 32nd minute. Chin played a perfect give-and-go with Josh Hughes inside the penalty area and slotted a right-footed shot home to put the hosts in front. Lansing answered shortly after the halftime break following a turnover in Richmond’s defensive third. Rafael Mentzingen picked up the loose ball and played a square pass to Ricky Lopez-Espin at the top of the 18-yard box. Lopez-Espin smacked a shot on frame, beating goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald and drawing his side level. The Ignite edged themselves in front 12 minutes later when Brandon Fricke was able to turn Kevin Coiffic’s header on frame and in. Daniel Jackson equalized for Richmond in the 92nd minute from a long-range effort to steal a point for the Kickers and extend their unbeaten streak to three games. Man of the Match

Daniel Jackson, Richmond Kickers - Jackson’s 92nd minute rocket from 25 yards out preserved a point for the Kickers. The forward battled all night and was responsible for two of Richmond’s five shots on target in the match.

GREENVILLE, SC. - North Texas SC continued its perfect start in 2019, claiming a 1-0 victory over Greenville Triumph SC in its first road match of the season Saturday night. Thomas Roberts scored the game’s only goal in the 17th minute on a strike from distance that took a deflection and beat goalkeeper Dallas Jaye. Greenville struggled in the attacking third, managing just five shots in the match. Dominic Boland created the Triumph’s best chance of the match, serving a great ball in from the right flank in the 50th minute. The cross found Jake Keegan free inside the six-yard box, but the forward’s attempted volley skied over the bar. The clean sheet marks North Texas’ third straight 1-0 victory and makes it three matches in a row without a goal for Greenville. Man of the Match

Alfusainey Jatta, North Texas SC - Jatta led the way for the North Texas defense in his first start at center back this season. The 19-year old won 16 duels throughout the match and finished the night with four tackles and nine clearances.
