FMFC gets a warm reception despite the chill; Tormenta FC might be rolling again

We’re officially through the first month of the season, and while two teams are still undefeated neither of them sits on top of the standings thanks to the unbalanced schedule. Here’s what we learned from the past weekend of action in League One.

SNOW PLACE LIKE HOME: The conditions might have been frosty for Forward Madison FC thanks to a snowstorm that blew through the region – at one point League One Vice President Steven Short grabbed a shovel to help the field-clearing efforts – but the scenes at Breese Stevens Field for the hardy sellout crowd of 4,462 fans produced one of the most visually memorable home openers we’ve seen this inaugural season. The game between the Flamingos and Greenville Triumph SC ended scoreless, but while there is still improvement needed for Madison on the field, the club’s opening night was an unqualified success.

THREE TIMES THREE: North Texas SC continued to roll, and while the final score of its 1-0 victory against last-place Orlando City B might not have appeared all that convincing – especially with OCB’s Matheus Silva having the misfortune of an own goal that decided the game – there was still a good deal to like about North Texas’ performance. The biggest improvement the side is going to need is to start taking more chances – NTSC currently leads the league with 17.6 shots per game, but is only seventh in chance conversion rate at 12 percent – but everything else about the side is looking ready for its first road trip to Greenville next week.

KEEPING THE PACE: We suggested that South Georgia Tormenta FC’s comeback bid last week in Chattanooga might serve it well as it headed to Tucson, and that proved to be the case as Head Coach John Miglarese’s side broke its three-game winless streak with a solid 2-0 victory against FC Tucson to cap its four-game road trip. Tormenta FC simply had too much for their hosts as it had a solid edge possession and ended up with a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. With its first bye of the season on the horizon, South Georgia will go into its week off feeling pretty good about where it stands.

REDS RISING: Tormenta FC’s next opponent, Toronto FC II, might be sitting just a point back in the standings when they meet on May 12 after the Reds continued their undefeated start to the season with a 2-0 victory on the road against Lansing Ignite FC. It was very much a bend-but-don’t-break performance defensively for TFC II after Luca Petrasso’s inspired early free kick – the sort that they were used to employing in the USL Championship in previous seasons – but despite ceding almost three-quarters of the possession to their hosts, Toronto stood up to the pressure well and further burnished their credentials as an early-season playoff contender.

KICKERS FINDING FORM: It’s a testament to the nature of the early season, but the Richmond Kickers have quickly moved themselves into the top-four conversation after their 1-0 win against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC that saw Joe Gallardo strike for the second time in as many games. After going winless through their first two home games the result gave the Red Army something to sing about and set up Head Coach David Bulow’s side for one of Week 6’s biggest games as it plays host to Lansing on Saturday night. With Ignite FC having taken victory in each of the first two meetings between the clubs the Kickers will be hoping their newly-found form can turn the tables on their visitors this time around at City Stadium.
