Madison, Greenville end scoreless in front of sold out crowd

Madison, Greenville played to a stalemate in front of sold out crowd; Kickers put in convincing performance against Red Wolves; North Texas continued its perfect start with a win over Orlando.

Forward Madison (0) FC vs Greenville Triumph SC (0)

MADISON, Wisc. - Forward Madison FC and Greenville Triumph SC played to a 0-0 draw in front of a sellout crowd at Breese Stevens Field Saturday night. After a winter storm blanketed Madison and Breese Stevens with a couple of inches of snow, neither team could muster much in terms of attacking chances. Aaron Walker came closest to breaking through for Greenville just before halftime when he hit a low free kick on frame, but Ryan Coulter was equal to it. The Flamingos nearly broke the deadlock from a free kick of their own in the 64th minute, but Josiel Nunez’s effort floated just wide. Both sides will feel they had chances to take all three points, but should go home happy with a point a piece.

Connor Tobin, Forward Madison - Tobin was strong defensively when called into action throughout the match. The center back won 9 of 11 duels and finished the night with 11 clearances.

Richmond Kickers (1) vs Chattanooga Red Wolves SC (0)

RICHMOND, VA. - The Richmond Kickers earned a 1-0 win over Chattanooga Red Wolves SC at City Stadium in what was perhaps the club’s best performance this season. Despite the narrow margin of victory, Richmond looked convincing on both sides of the ball throughout the night. The Kickers defense didn’t allow a shot on target in the match, leaving goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald with little to do. The hosts connected well in the attacking third and opened the scoring through Joe Gallardo just after halftime. The goal was the product of a good build-up through midfield that ended with Mutaya Mwape with the ball on the right flank. Mwape drove to the endline before cutting the ball back to Gallardo who calmly finished to score his second goal in as many matches. The win is Richmond’s first at home and second on the bounce. They’ll look to continue the positive momentum next week when they host Lansing Ignite.

Conor Shanosky, Richmond Kickers - Shanosky was key in Richmond’s best defensive performance of the season. The center back won 13 of 16 duels and led the team in clearances while completing 83% of his passes.

North Texas SC (1) vs Orlando City B (0)

FRISCO, TX. - North Texas SC won its third consecutive match at Toyota Stadium Saturday night, defeating Orlando City B 1-0. Left without leading goal scorer Ricardo Pepe for the match, North Texas relied on an own goal to continue its perfect start to the season. The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute when Thomas Roberts curled a driven inswinging corner kick into the six-yard box. Roberts’ service hit off an Orlando defender and found its way into the back of the net. After falling behind, Orlando pressed hard for a goal, but struggled to create anything dangerous. Despite a significant shot advantage in the match, Orlando struggled to hit the target, forcing goalkeeper Carlos Avilez to make just two saves on 17 shots. With the win, North Texas has taken nine points from its first three matches this season.
