Triumph, Red Wolves earn first wins in front of big crowds

Greenville Triumph and Chattanooga Red Wolves earned first league wins in front of sellout crowds; Kickers and Tormenta ended level

GREENVILLE TRIUMPH SC (2) VS LANSING IGNITE FC (1)

GREENVILLE, SC – Greenville Triumph SC came from behind to earn the first win in club history in a match that ended with 19 men on the pitch at Legacy Early Field. Ricky Lopez-Espin gave Lansing the lead against the run of play midway through the first half. The Triumph drew themselves level just after halftime through Jake Keegan. Carlos Gomez skipped past a defender just outside the penalty area and earned a free kick, which he quickly played to Keegan. With the Lansing defense slow to react, Keegan drove into the penalty area and struck a low shot that found the bottom corner to score the Triumph’s first goal in history. Just after Keegan’s equalizer, Robinson Moshobane and Ricardo Perez were shown second yellow cards minutes apart to leave Lansing playing down two men. Cole Siler would cut the man-advantage in half in the 77th minute when he was shown his second yellow card for a clumsy challenge on Lansing goalkeeper Michael Kirk. The decisive goal came from a corner kick swung in by Tyler Polak in the 86th minute. Kevin Politz got his head on Polak’s in-swinging corner kick at the near post. Politz’s flicked header hit off Lansing’s Grant Stoneman and found the back of the net and helped Greenville earn its first three points of the season.

CHATTANOOGA RED WOLVES SC (1) VS FORWARD MADISON FC (0)

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Veteran striker Eamon Zayed struck a terrific volley in the second half to lead Chattanooga Red Wolves SC to the first win in club history Saturday night at David Stanton Field. Madison looked lively in its first match of the season, creating several quality chances in the first half. Mason Toye almost got the visitors on the board within the first ten minutes after breaking free down the left flank, but his attempted chip was grabbed by Alex Mangels and the score remained level. Zayed would break the deadlock midway through the second half. The striker cleverly let a chest-high pass run across his body before striking a stinging volley past goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair to give the hosts the lead. Zayed’s goal was enough to send the sellout crowd home happy and give the Red Wolves a historic win.

Richard Dixon, Chattanooga Red Wolves – Dixon led the way for the Red Wolves defensively against a quality Madison attack. The right back ended the night with four tackles, six clearances, and two interceptions while joining into the attack and helping his side create chances.

RICHMOND KICKERS (0) VS TORMENTA FC (0)

RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond Kickers earned its first League One point in history Saturday afternoon at City Stadium, drawing 0-0 with Tormenta FC. Both defenses shined in the match, limiting the opposing attack’s scoring opportunities. One of the few chances in the match fell to Matt Bolduc early on in the first half. Maxi Rodriguez found the ball at his feet at the top of the box following good link up play through midfield and threaded a perfectly weighted pass through to Bolduc. The winger found himself alone 15 yards out, but his wayward strike missed the target. Tormenta’s best chance came at the end of the first half from a free kick just outside the penalty area. Charlie Dennis confidently struck the dead ball on frame, forcing goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald to touch the stinging shot onto the bar and out for a corner. The two sides traded possession in the second half, creating little in front of goal and each team took a point. The draw pushes Tormenta’s record to 2-0-1, while Richmond improves to 0-1-1.
