ROAD TO THE FINAL

Greenville Triumph SC

  • July 25 vs. Richmond Kickers (W, 3-2)

An early-season clash with the Kickers was the only match this season in which Triumph SC scored three goals. It also showcased Greenville’s defensive prowess, when the team was reduced to 10 men with 15 minutes remaining but saw out the win.
  • August 5 vs. South Georgia Tormenta FC (W, 1-0)

This matchup with regional rivals Tormenta FC was the first instance of what became a recurring trend for Greenville this season - 1-0 wins courtesy of late goals. After a tight contest, JJ Donnelly netted the deciding goal in stoppage time - the first sign of the late-game mentality that came to Triumph SC’s aid so many times throughout the campaign. It was the first of three consecutive (and six total) victories by a 1-0 scoreline for Greenville.
  • September 4 at South Georgia Tormenta FC (W, 2-1)

As good as Greenville’s season was, it did feature one prominent rough patch, with back-to-back losses away against the New England Revolution II and Richmond Kickers. On the third game of that road swing, Triumph SC fought to a 2-1 win over Tormenta, nipping a potential elongated skid in the bud and kicking off the five-game winning streak which saw Triumph SC clinch a League One Final berth.
  • September 19 at Chattanooga Red Wolves SC (W, 1-0)

When John Harkes’ side traveled to Chattanooga, the Red Wolves were the hottest team in the league. They were riding a three-game winning streak, including a pair of home victories that same week against two of the top teams in the league in Omaha and Richmond. Yet Triumph SC went into CHI Memorial Stadium and did what other teams had been unable to do, staying compact defensively and grabbing an 84th minute winner through Noah Pilato to extend Greenville’s lead atop the table.
  • September 25 vs. North Texas SC (W, 1-0)

The lone rematch of last year’s League One Final, Greenville exacted a measure of revenge by beating North Texas by a score of (you guessed it) 1-0. This time, the late goal came from Jake Keegan, and the win put Triumph SC within touching distance of the Final.

Union Omaha

  • August 1 vs. North Texas SC (W, 1-0)

Union Omaha picked up its first goal and first win in club history on the same night, and it did so against the reigning League One title-winners. Evan Conway’s 74th-minute strike was the difference maker as the Owls made an early statement of intent in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Werner Field.
  • September 30 at Fort Lauderdale CF (W, 3-2)

Omaha looked to be falling out of the postseason picture during a three-game winless run in September, during which the Owls failed to score a single goal. But Head Coach Jay Mims’ team stopped the rot with a gritty win against Fort Lauderdale, eventually finding a winning goal with six minutes to go through Ethan Vanacore-Decker despite twice previously letting a lead slip.
  • October 3 vs. South Georgia Tormenta FC (W, 3-0)

Omaha followed up the win in Fort Lauderdale with perhaps its best all-around performance of the season, which vaulted Los Buhos right back into the race for second place. The Union defense limited Tormenta to just one shot on target, new signing Tobias Otieno stood out in midfield, and the goals came from three different scorers as Omaha cruised to victory.
  • October 18 at Greenville Triumph SC (W, 2-1)

Omaha gave its chances of reaching the League One Final a massive boost when it became the first and only team to defeat Triumph SC in Greenville during the regular season. Christian Molina and Conway both came up big with superb strikes, and Rashid Nuhu made a spectacular save to deny Greenville an equalizer in the dying moments and preserve the win.
  • October 24 vs. Fort Lauderdale CF (W, 1-0)

Omaha had a flair for the dramatics all season, and why should the season finale be any different? Knowing a win would put them in the 2020 League One Final, Los Buhos left it late against Fort Lauderdale CF as Evan Conway scored his sixth goal of the season in the 91st minute to secure a 1-0 victory and a place in the title match.
